Virtual Education

October 21st – 8:00 AM CT

EVENT DETAILS

IMPACT

We're providing over 100 minutes of educational content to serve students.

About the cause: A wide body of research shows that adverse childhood experiences combine with poverty to undermine children’s wellbeing and their ability to learn and thrive. They are unable to sit still and focus. Their parents, who are overstressed and struggling to make ends meet, are at risk for higher levels of depression, substance abuse, and domestic violence. Black children overall are scoring the lowest in all academic, health, and developmental indicators compared to their peers.

About the event: With Pencils of Promise, we work with you to build a virtual “lesson plan” to teach a subject or demonstrate a skill around basic math, science, English, hygiene, STEM, or soft skills. This educational content will be reviewed and delivered to teachers and families to provide the content to students. Interns can create their videos individually or as a team. During the live event, we talk about the status and importance of virtual education at this time and showcase a few of your videos!

Join us for this virtual event and be part of the movement!

CREATING YOUR CONTENT

Get creative and keep it simple.

We don’t expect everyone to have a few thousand dollars worth of film equipment lying around. Thankfully, you can create authentic, engaging content with your smartphone! Here are a few tips/guidelines as you work to create your content:

  1. Length – Your videos will be viewed by age groups 6 – 12. The shorter your video the better. We often recommend trying to have your video be 10 minutes or less to ensure your audience remains captivated.
  2. Individual or Team – Feel free to include your family, friends, or team members to make creating your video as fun as possible! It sometimes helps to have another person to bounce ideas off of or to hold the camera for you.
  3. Editing your video – Your videos do not need to be professionally edited. Your audience will appreciate the authenticity of you sharing lessons and skills with a video created at home. Free video editing software like iMovie or Windows Video Editor can get the job done. You likely also have video editing software on your phone as well!

Recommended Free Tools

Loom – Free video recording and editing software that can be used on your laptop or smartphone. Learn More

iMovie – Free video editing software that can be used on your laptop or smartphone for Apple devices. Learn More

Smart Phone Camera – The camera on your phone is likely better than any camera you own. We recommend keeping it simple and using your phone as much as possible!

THEMES FOR YOUR VIDEO

So the big question... what are you going to teach?

Most will immediately think about content as it relates to traditional academic subjects, but we encourage you to get creative and look at other life and soft skills to teach.

Ask yourself “What am I good at and can I teach that in a short video?”

OUR PARTNER

IMPACT

Pencils of Promise has built 530 schools and supported 110,380 students.

Pencils of Promise is guided by our revolutionary “for-purpose” approach. Blending the head of a for-profit business with the heart of a humanitarian nonprofit, we rigorously measure the return on investment of every donor dollar we spend. Joy and passion are great, but results are what we’re all about. We believe every child should have access to quality education. We create schools, programs and global communities around the common goal of education for all.

QUESTIONS?

We're here to help!

Check out our FAQs below or get in touch with us anytime at companies@wehero.co! You can also ping Kai in the bottom right-hand corner of our website.

I’m really struggling editing my video. Can I submit it un-edited?

Yes! We can’t guarantee it will be used but our team will review it and see how we can best place it.

What happens once I submit my video?

Our team reviews the content and then adds it to a searchable library where students will have access. During our review, our team looks for the top three videos that we can feature during the live event!

I have an idea about what I’d like to teach but would like to run it by someone first. Can I email someone at WeHero my idea?

Yes! Please feel free to email your event coordinator Ben at ben@wehero.co for a review.
