About the cause:
According to the United Nations, there are more than 82 million displaced people around the world. From civil wars in Syria to gang violence in Central America, economic collapse and environmental destruction force millions of people from their homes. Every minute, 30 people worldwide become newly displaced. Half of the world’s refugees are children, and thousands take flight without the protection of parents or other family members. Seeking asylum in another country isn’t a simple fete. It is a long line of choices and decisions taken on by people who are already vulnerable who face intense hardship when leaving their homes. Refugee Rescue is a simulation exercise to understand the issues of poverty and injustice for the displaced 1% of the population, which has doubled in the last decade.
About the event:
The event will start with a keynote as we seek to garner education around the current climate of the international refugee crisis and the organisations that support many. We will then shift gears, entering a simulation where participants will become a family looking to flee their current circumstances. Participants chose along critical areas in the simulation to be granted asylum in another country. Based on the true stories of many, places, names, and dates are changed to protect privacy. Post-event, we will discuss the weight of these decisions and reflect on what we can do to provide additional support. We will be creating flash decks for asylum seekers looking to integrate into the United States.
