We're providing children with story time videos

About the cause: The digital divide is the gap between parts of the world where access to technology is very different. Especially for kids, not having access to the internet can make a big difference in their education. Reading is a gateway skill that paves the pathway for future success. Without it, kids are simply less likely to graduate high school, find employment, or successfully avoid other hardships like poverty, homelessness, hunger, and injustice.

About the event: We will talk about the impact of the digital divide in the United States and the importance of reading at an early age. Participants will each receive a unique book and a flash drive in the mail. They’ll read their books aloud, record their storytime, upload and submit them for WeHero to complete. WeHero will put the digital submissions on a thumb drive, and send them to the nonprofit. Getting a video on a flash drive ensures that children without access to the internet can still watch these videos and have the same experience as kids with the internet. We will share the videos with our partner nonprofit organization, to help support kids with early age literacy.

Join us for this virtual event as we learn about the digital divide and connect over a fun activity at home. Let’s help some kids!

On average, individuals support 1 kid with educational supplies every 5 days just by surfing the web

Provide education materials for kids with every browser tab you open in Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge!

The WeHero extension transforms your “new tab” page. Each time you open a tab, you will be greeted with a new image, the amount raised, and a couple of banner ads. We collect ad revenue from the page and use it to donate to the causes you are supporting!

The best part, you see the actual number of kids you supported!

Helping bridge the digital divide in early education

Reading matters. It’s an early gateway skill that paves the pathway for future success. Without it, kids are simply less likely to graduate high school, find employment, or successfully avoid other hardships like poverty, homelessness, hunger, and injustice.

A student who can’t read on grade level by third grade is four times less likely to graduate than a child who does read proficiently in third grade. Add poverty to the mix, and a student is more than 6 times less likely to graduate on time than his or her proficient, wealthier peer.

Add in a lack of internet access, student’s overall academic performance can be impacted. Students without the internet can’t connect with teachers or classmates, do independent research, or access online homework help. For families, not having internet access can mean missing out on information or losing out on a direct line of communication with schools and teachers.

Nonprofit organizations are working hard to help bridge the digital divide. Through more affordable broadband access, tablet computer donations, and offering accessible downloaded programs, we continue to find solutions so a student’s education does not suffer due to digital poverty.
